How to figure out what you want

Wanting is not discovered by introspection alone — it shows up in what you keep returning to and what you quietly avoid. Read the evidence you have already generated before generating more.

What to actually weigh

01

What do you already return to?

Look at where your attention goes when nothing is required of you. That record is more honest than any list of values you could write today.

02

What are you avoiding, and why?

Avoidance is directional information. Some of it is fear of the thing; some is fear of wanting it and failing. Those point opposite ways.

03

What is the smallest test?

Wanting is confirmed by contact, not contemplation. Pick the cheapest experiment that would tell you something real within a month.

Frequently asked

Why do I not know what I want?

Often because several things you want are in conflict, and picking one means grieving the others. That is a harder problem than not knowing, and it responds to different work.

How do I find my purpose?

Purpose tends to be assembled backwards from things you actually did, not chosen in advance. Start with the smallest thing you would do anyway and follow it.
